چکیده

The linear association between two continuous quantities is often assessed in terms of Pearson’s correlation coefficient, r. However, if the data are not homogeneous, i.e., consist of groups, then it is important to decompose r into components that measure the correlation within the groups, and the correlation between the groups. We point out the importance of examining these components, and present a method for computing them. Our approach has several attractive features. First, all three measures of correlation are computed in a unified framework based on the analysis of (co)variance in a single linear model. Second, it allows one to measure nonlinear correlations. Finally, p-values, traditionally computed in linear modeling can be utilized to test the statistical significance of the three measures of correlation. The method is applied to assess the correlation between invasive observations and noninvasive estimates of intracranial pressure (ICP), with individual patients representing each group. The total correlation is 0.506, while the within-group and between-group correlations are 0.053 and 0.518, respectively. As such, the ICP predictions are useful for estimating/predicting the mean (over time) ICP for any patient, but they are useless for monitoring an individual’s ICP at any time.

Noninvasive and quantitative intracranial pressure estimation using ultrasonographic measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter

We aimed to quantitatively assess intracranial pressure (ICP) using optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurements. We recruited 316 neurology patients in whom ultrasonographic ONSD was measured before lumbar puncture. They were randomly divided into a modeling and a test group at a ratio of 7:3. In the modeling group, we conducted univariate and multivariate analyses to assess associations be...

The Effect of Inhalation Anesthesia with Hyperventilation and Total Intravenous Anesthesia on Intracranial Pressure Control in Pediatrics with Craniosynostosis Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background: Intracranial pressure (ICP) control is one of the anesthesiologist challenges in craniosynostosis repair surgery, especially in multiple sutures involvement. The aim of this study was comparing the effect of two anesthesia methods including inhalation with hyperventilation and total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) on ICP control and surgeon satisfaction in pediatrics with craniosynost...

Noninvasive estimation of cerebral perfusion pressure with transcranial Doppler ultrasonography in traumatic brain injury.

AIM In traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients, to overcome the secondary insults, cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) oriented therapy is recommended. The study is assigned to estimate CPP values with middle cerebral artery (MCA) flow velocities measured noninvasively using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD). MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-seven TBI patients were studied. Intracranial pressu...

Investigation of sympathetic mechanism of inverse relationship between scalp and leg blood flow with increasing intracranial pressure in the rabbit

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is one of most important factors in determining health and function of cerebroscular system. However the methods of measuring ICP are usually invasive . In an attempt to find a noninvasive method to assess ICP, in previous study web found a reverse relationships between changes in ICP and blood flow in scalp (SBF) and leg skin (LSBF) . In this study the role of sympa...

The Effects of Shilajit on Brain Edema, Intracranial Pressure and Neurologic Outcomes following the Traumatic Brain Injury in Rat

Objective(s): Brain edema is one of the most serious causes of death within the first few days after trauma brain injury (TBI). In this study we have investigated the role of Shilajit on brain edema, blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, intracranial pressure (ICP) and neurologic outcomes following brain trauma.   Materials and Methods: Diffuse traumatic brain trauma was indu...
